Updates: Informational Meeting Tuesday May 29 7-8pm Gator Commons
XC Rules and Expectations
Expectations:
We expect our girls to attend all practices with the girls’ team. We cater our workouts towards each individual athlete and have planned these workouts with the development of each runner in mind. We expect each runner to work hard at practice and understand that we have the team’s best interest in mind at all times. We expect that our runners maintain a positive and supportive attitude about the team, practices, and teammates. Cross Country is a non-cut sport, however, dismissal from the team can occur if an athlete has a negative impact on the team.
Varsity Team:
Based on times and coaches discretion, the varsity squad will consist of 7-8 athletes. Athletes may be bumped from Junior Varsity to Varsity and vice-versa at any time during the season. If a Junior Varsity athlete beats a Varsity runner’s time in a meet, this does not automatically justify a varsity position. As coaches we take into account injuries, personal matters, and the standing of the whole team when making Varsity and Junior Varsity decisions.

Practices:Practices begin and end on the green. Practices begin at 4 pm. Captains are responsible for beginning practice warm-ups at 4 pm. Athletes are expected to communicate with coaches if they anticipate being absent. Athletes are expected to complete all training put forward by the coaches to the best of their ability. Athletes are expected to come to practice prepared. Prepared means all workout clothes required for running, a full water bottle, and having used the restroom before practice begins at 4:00 pm. Practices will end at 5:30. Please have a ride in place by 5:30. FRIDAY PRACTICE WILL BE OVER BY 5.
Tardiness: Practices start at 4 (this excludes bus issues). If you are late for practice you will do repeat 400s or 800s. Excessive tardiness may result in dismissal from the team. Absences: Excused absences: parent, medical, or school related. Everything else is unexcused. More than three unexcused absences will result in dismissal from the team. You must let a coach know before practice if you are going to be absent. Team Parent GroupMr. and Mrs. Alexander: [email protected] and [email protected]

UniformsAthletes must turn in uniforms at the end of the season. Uniforms will be handed out by number, beginning with varsity. Please keep in mind that we are working with a very limited budget, and that athletes might not get the exact size they want. We do our best to accommodate the needs of the entire team. Athletes will be provided with a jersey, running shorts, warm up jacket, and warm up pants (as available). If athletes want to run in spandex shorts, they may need to provide their own. Please make sure the black spandex does not have a visible logo.
Shoes We recommend that all runners purchase running shoes for training. Every runner will require something different from their running shoe. We recommend our girls go to Fleet Feet in Irmo or Todd & Moore Sports in downtown Columbia. Both stores have their customers do a specialized fitting and evaluate the runner's stride before recommending a shoe for that runner. Racing Spikes We would like to have our varsity runners or runners who anticipate moving onto the varsity team purchase racing spikes. Racing spikes help enhance racing speed and give your runner a leg up in competitions. These can be purchased at the stores listed above. |
MeetsMeets are normally scheduled for Wednesday and Saturday. Athletes are expected to ride the bus to and from our meets. Parents must contact the coach if an exception needs to be made. For some of our meets we will be sharing a bus with the boys’ team. For these meets, we will need parents to help transport athletes to and from the meet, as the bus cannot hold all runners on each team. Most meets will include both Varsity and JV runners but there will be some that will only affect one or the other.
